Ben, the owner of Fernwood Coffee was kind enough to host us for a tour of his coffee shop and roastery during our brief visit to Victoria last week. Robert and I enjoyed a generous selection of beverages (yes, all of those cups above were ours) and one of the best blt sandwiches in the City – yum!

I met Andi at Make it a few weekends ago in Edmonton and instantly fell in love with her accessories line, Hoakon + Helga. Actually, I may, or may not have spent most of the weekend petting her super soft handbags! Named after her Norwegian grandparents, Hoakon + Helga is a line of eco-friendly and unique silhouette of bags. Using vintage leather jackets, her line strives to achieve a respect for the past and future using sustainable approaches.

Though the bag silhouettes are similar, each one takes on its own set of visual characteristics due to the nature of the initial recycled vintage jacket. Each one is different in color, shape and pocket design. The result is a bag that each owner can call one-of-a-kind.

The day after we returned to Vancouver from Edmonton, we re-packed our bags and headed to Victoria, BC the following morning. I’ve been to Victoria numerous times in the past both with family and when Robert worked as a tour guide back in the day. If there was room on his bus, I would tag along on some days and as he drove through his usual route of the coast, Beacon Hill Park, Butchart Gardens, and downtown Victoria (Empress, Parliament Buildings).

With only two days in the City and with Robert working on a project, I had the opportunity to stroll through Victoria and see it from a brand new perspective. Yes, I did stop at a few “regular” tourist haunts as I happened to be staying close by, but I also discovered new-to-me neighbourhoods and eateries. Above are a few snapshots I took during our first day there and two more field trips are planned for later this week!

kickstarter :: summer school

With only 3 days to go, Summer School, a project by Erin Jane Nelson and Ming Lin to be held at Project Space located in Vancouver’s Chinatown from July 20th – August 28th, 2012 need your help!

Summer School will turn a Vancouver-based Artist Run Center into a free pop-up school for one week. Classes will be taught by Ming and Erin as well as several local guest teachers covering a wide range of topics including:

Sustainable dye techniques
Homemade looms and back strap weaving
Air tasting
Indigo dyeing and kite making
Making chapbooks out of anything
Solar photograms
Mushroom spore printing and edible mushroom identification
Creative analysis and resdesign of local flora
and more!

In addition to the school component, all the works of art created by students and teachers of Summer School will be included in an exhibition to be on view at Project Space for the entire month of August. They will also host public artist talks and openings in addition to publishing an accompanying book, Lesson Book, which will feature instructions from all of the classes, curatorial essays, images of the projects, and other surprise material for those that can not participate in the school.

The past week went by like a snap with us wrapping up Got Craft?, more cram crafting, and prepping for our 12 hour road trip to Edmonton. We spent some time unpacking the boxes that arrived earlier with the rest of our goods from the UK and hopefully will spend the long weekend painting and getting the apartment back into shape! After eating on the go for the past few weeks, I am super excited to do a proper grocery shop and get some baking done as well as plan some home cooked meals for the coming week. Hope everybody is having a fantastic start to their long weekend!

The last time I was in Edmonton I was 11 and my Aunt flew my cousin and I to the West Edmonton Mall where we stayed in a theme room, rode the submarines, watched a dolphin show, and visited the water park! We left a day late to catch up on work and arrived Thursday evening for Make it and to visit family.

Between the show and family, we didn’t have too much free time in the city. We made a few trips to Transcend for flat whites, checked out the West Edmonton Mall for old times sake, picked up a plant stand at Old Strathcona Mall, and had my first po’ boy at Dadeo.

Thanks Edmonton! Hopefully we won’t wait another 21 years to visit again!

I stumbled onto Jade Phillips’ flickr the other day and fell in love with her fox images created with a sharpie, a russian book, and some prismacolour markers. Foxes are as common as raccoons in London and we often spotted them running down our street or sometimes even in the backyard.

field trip :: save on meats

Ack! This post is long overdue, but better late than never right?! Last month, we visited Save On Meats for their DIY workshops which we purchased via Groupon to learn how to make our own bacon, pancetta, and sausages. My family used to shop at Chinatown every Saturday and then we would make our way to Woodward’s and Army + Navy for a malt or hot dog. I remember Save On Meats well and I am pleased to see what it has become today with the cafe / meat shop / cooking facilities / classroom space (coming soon!).

I have learned that meat isn’t exactly the most attractive thing to photograph and as we made the sausages in one of the meat lockers upstairs, the light wasn’t the best. I will say that both the workshop and the company was fantastic, and I will never purchase bacon again. D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) all the way! We are pretty much through (we did give some away!) the several pounds of meat that we brought home and I can’t wait to truly document our second attempt! Cheers to newfound skills!
